Context

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources promotes the development of the Province’s fishing and aquaculture industries to ensure an economically viable, internationally competitive, and ecologically sustainable fishery. The Department also develops the policies and programs to support the forestry, including management of forest resources and continued development of competitive and sustainable primary and value-added agriculture and agrifoods industry. The department is also responsible for fish and wildlife enforcement and manages wildlife resources and the associated ecological, economic and social benefits in addition to the protection and preservation of species at risk. Additionally, the Department also manages and allocates provincial Crown lands in a responsible manner for the continuous social and economic benefit for residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Duties

While reporting to the Chief Aquaculture Veterinarian, this is a highly professional position in aquatic animal health management within the Province. Work involves responsibility for veterinary service to fin (shell) fish producers and researchers in the province including the operation of diagnostic laboratories in St. John’s, St. Alban’s and Grand Falls-Windsor, the supervision of technical personnel, and participation in the aquatic animal health regulatory program. Key responsibilities include the provision of primary aquatic animal health care service for cultured aquatic animals, response to emergency service needs, conducting active and passive surveillance programs, conducting biosecurity audits and providing evidence-based decision making leading to sound health policy. Preparation and delivery of public presentations will also be required.

  1. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
  2. MED A3, SVOP and PCOC training (asset)
  3. Experience/specialization with aquatic medicine
  4. Supervisory experience
  5. Experience conducting biosecurity audits
