Position Details (What is this?)

Context
The Department of Justice and Public Safety ensures the impartial administration of justice and the protection of the public interest through the dual offices of the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice and Public Safety. Responsibilities of the department include family justice services, fines administration, support enforcement, policing, the sheriff’s office, adult secure custody, adult probation services, secure youth justice services, victim services and administration of the courts. The department also both represents and provides legal services to the Crown including legal advice to departments, litigation, prosecution and legislative drafting services. The Department of Justice and Public Safety aims to improve public protection and access to justice in a manner that is sensitive to the diverse needs of its clients.
Duties
The Court Officer I performs French bilingual specialized legal clerical work in the procedural operation of the Registry of the Provincial Court.  The Court Officer 1 processes court cases, actions, proceedings and hearings; types accurate and complete verbatim transcripts of court proceedings and certifies same as the official record of the court. Additionally, attends sittings of court, takes minutes and records proceedings, calls cases, performs swearing-in duties, records pleas, enters trial dates and marks and takes possession of documents and exhibits for continuity and transfers to custodian. Responsibilities also include preparation of court orders and certifies same; receipts cash; provides frontline counter service, files and checks document for accuracy and completeness as well as compliance with the various rules and regulations of the court. Circuit travel may also be required. Performs other related work as required.

Screening Criteria
  1. Diploma in office administration (equivalencies will be considered)
  2. Diploma in office administration (Legal) or Paralegal (asset)
  3. Office administrative experience
  4. Experience working in a legal environment (asset)
  5. Bilingual in both French and English
  6. Pass OPAC Keyboarding testing with minimum typing speed or 45 nwpm with 95% accuracy

  2. The successful candidate is required to be fluently bilingual (French/English) in reading, writing, and oral interaction. Candidates must demonstrate their level of fluency and will be tested.
