Position Details (What is this?)

Context
The Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development supports individuals, families and communities in Newfoundland and Labrador in achieving improved health and social well-being and reduced poverty; and ensures the protection of children, youth and adults from abuse or neglect. The department promotes the values of inclusion, diversity, and healthy active living and leads the development of policies, programs and partnerships to improve services and the overall social development of the province. The department has over 700 staff delivering services in 40 locations throughout the province.  
Duties
Within an aboriginal community, this position is responsible for providing professional social work services to clients of the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development, covering a spectrum of services and programs including Protective Intervention Services, Adoption Services, Youth Services and Community Youth Corrections. The Social Worker II will conduct risk and safety assessments; provide counselling and case management for children, youth and families to address family dynamics and complex psychosocial factors. Other duties include screening, identifying and prioritizing referrals for service, developing intervention plans, consulting with other professionals, as necessary, and completing documentation in accordance with professional standards of practice and policies and procedures of the Department. In addition, the Social Worker II prepares reports, completes legal documents and provides testimony in court, as required, conducts home or agency visits, and supports community based services. The incumbent provides supervision of other staff including Community Service Workers, Social Worker Assistants, administrative support positions and social work students; and consults with and guides on site staff in the course of their duties ensuring that work assignments are carried out efficiently and effectively. The Social Worker II adheres to the standards for client services in accordance with the Social Work Code of Ethics, Social Work Standards Practice and Departmental standards; and is responsible for performing other related duties as required.

  1. Completion of an Undergraduate Degree in Social Work
  2. Experience working with children, adolescents and families
  3. Completion of a Graduate Degree in Social Work with a focus in Indigenous Studies (asset)
  4. Experience working with people of Aboriginal decent (asset)

Conditions of Acceptance
  1. Flexible work schedule: 150 hours (combination of 7.5 and 11.25 hour shifts) in a two week period, followed by two weeks off.
