Position Details (What is this?)

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources promotes the development of the Province’s fishing and aquaculture industries to ensure an economically viable, internationally competitive, and ecologically sustainable fishery. The Department also develops the policies and programs to support the forestry, including management of forest resources and continued development of competitive and sustainable primary and value-added agriculture and agrifoods industry. The department is also responsible for fish and wildlife enforcement and manages wildlife resources and the associated ecological, economic and social benefits in addition to the protection and preservation of species at risk. Additionally, the Department also manages and allocates provincial Crown lands in a responsible manner for the continuous social and economic benefit for residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Reporting to the Director of Animal Health, this is a highly professional position in laboratory management for the diagnosis of diseases in animals and the evaluation of the safety and quality of foods within the Province. The Veterinary Pathologist will provide expert analysis of diagnostic services, and direction on operations to technical staff within the laboratory. Interact with, manage and advise and laboratory personnel in proper specimen processing techniques; management of the laboratory’s ISO accreditation program; examination of animal carcasses submitted for the purpose of disease diagnosis and or forensic analysis, including histopathological evaluation of tissues from these animals; the development of new disease or food quality testing within divisional laboratories; cooperation in provincial, national or international research projects that advance the regulatory and extension goals of the division and the department  and cooperation with other levels and agencies of government on cooperative disease surveillance and food safety activities. Represents the department on various committeees;prepares/reviews various written materials including briefing notes, technical presentations and proposals; prepares the division’s annual budget and maintains control of allotted funds. Other related duties as required.

Screening Criteria
  1. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree
  2. Completion of a 3 year residency in Anatomic Pathology
  3. Experience in mammalian diseases and pathology
  4. Experience with evaluation of the safety and quality of foods
  5. Management experience

Conditions of Employment(What is this?)

Conditions of
  1. Demonstration of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree
  2. Eligible for full licensure with the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Veterinarians
  3. Board certification or by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) or the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP)
  4. Alternatively board eligibility may be considered with appointment renewal contingent on ACVP or ECVP board certification within 3 years of the date of hire
  5. Valid class 05 drivers license
