Position Details (What is this?)

The Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development supports individuals, families and communities in Newfoundland and Labrador in achieving improved health and social well-being and reduced poverty; and ensures the protection of children, youth and adults from abuse or neglect. The department promotes the values of inclusion, diversity, and healthy active living and leads the development of policies, programs and partnerships to improve services and the overall social development of the province. The department has over 700 staff delivering services in 40 locations throughout the province.  
The Social Worker III provides specialized social work practice in providing intensive therapeutic counselling and supportive services in the treatment of clients of the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development (CSSD) (Individual, couples, families and group therapies are provided). This position provides therapy in situations where the application of professional analysis and a broad range of theoretical frameworks, in complex practice situations, are essential; and the incumbent functions autonomously and use independent judgment in determining appropriate intervention strategies, and in developing, implementing and analyzing treatment plans. The incumbent researches, analyzes and utilizes theoretical frameworks to address the needs presented by clients and also designs, develops, delivers and evaluates educational seminars, training and presentations for service providers, client groups, professionals and community groups. The incumbent provides supervision and evaluation of graduate and undergraduate social work students; consults with the management group and other staff members to develop, design, implement and evaluate new programs for CSSD clients; and compiles workload statistics and maintains accurate and comprehensive records of client assessment, treatment intervention and progress, prepares reports, completes legal documents and provides testimony in court as required. The Social Worker III also chairs and serves on external committees, contributes to policy and protocol development while ensuring adherence to departmental standards; and performs other duties as required.

  1. Completion of a Masters degree in Social Work
  2. Social work experience working with children and families
  3. Experience in assessment and clinical therapy
  4. Experience developing and delivering educational seminars or presentations (asset)
