Duties
Reporting to the Tax Manager in St. John’s, the Gasoline and Tobacco Tax Inspector will be responsible for performing independent, on- site inspection activities to ensure compliance with provincial tax laws and regulations. This will include obtaining fuel samples for analysis, issuing Summary Offence Tickets where applicable, recommending prosecution and preparing court documents and providing court evidence for violations of the provincial tax laws.  This position also performs field and desk audit work representing the Department of Finance through contact with the general public, business community and registered taxpayers on an assigned tax; examines and analyzes audit evidence to ensure compliance with provincial tax laws and regulations; performs audit procedures;  compiles working papers and reports; determines the ability of taxpayers to pay assessments; recommends corrective actions for non-compliance; and provides educational services to the public relating to provincial tax laws.

Screening Criteria
  1. Completion of an undergraduate degree program in business or commerce with a specialization in accounting (equivalencies will be considered)
  2. Experience in auditing or accounting
  3. Experience in the practical application of provincial tax laws and regulations. (asset)
  4. Experience in the petroleum industry. (asset)

  2. Recent and satisfactory driver’s abstract
  3. Recent and satisfactory Certificate of Conduct from local police
Conditions of Acceptance
  1. Willing to accept day travel (significant)
  2. Willing to accept overnight travel (occasional)
  3. Acknowledges requirements for heavy lifting (50 lbs max weight)
  4. Candidates must be able to climb bulk fuel tanks (in excess of 12 meters)
  5. Candidates must be able to visually distinguish between colours for fuel identification purposes
