Position Details (What is this?)

Context
The Department of Transportation and Works is responsible for the administration, supervision, control, regulation, management and direction of all matters relating to transportation and public works. As such, the Department oversees the construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; the provision of the provincial ferry services; management of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers; and construction and management of provincial government buildings. The vision of the Department of Transportation and Works is of safe, reliable and sustainable transportation and public works infrastructure and services, demonstrating a commitment to service excellence in supporting the social and economic needs of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Duties
This is skilled work in the operation of a variety of heavy and light equipment. The primary duties of this position will entitle the operation for both small and large paint striping equipment.  In addition, the incumbent maybe be required to operate heavy equipment such as a tandem truck, front-end-loader, snow blower, etc., as a relief for other Regional Operations include coastal airstrips; prepare and maintain work records on the operation of assigned equipment; perform preventative maintenance functions and non-complex servicing; participate in training, as required; interacts with the general public and perform other related duties as required.

Merit Criteria (What is this?)

Screening Criteria
  1. Experience with maintenance and practices utilized in the operation of heavy equipment
  2. Experience in the operation of pavement marking equipment. (asset)
  3. Completion of High School. Equivalencies will be considered
  4. Possession of the appropriate operator’s licenses as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (Class 03 license with 08 and 09 endorsements)
  5. Clearly demonstrate the ability to report to the Depot within one half hour of notification of after-duty call

  2. Knowledge of the safety regulations utilized in the operation of heavy equipment
  3. Ability to make decisions
  4. Ability to manage time and tasks

  1. Valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 03 license with 08 and 09 endorsements
  2. Recent and clean driver’s abstract
Conditions of Acceptance
  1. Travel throughout the Labrador Region will be required
  2. Overtime may be required, on short notice
  3. Practical heavy equipment testing will be administered prior to interview. Driver’s abstract will be required at that time
