Position Details (What is this?)

Context
The Department of Transportation and Works is responsible for the administration, supervision, control, regulation, management and direction of all matters relating to transportation and public works. As such, the Department oversees the construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; the provision of the provincial ferry services; management of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers; and construction and management of provincial government buildings. The vision of the Department of Transportation and Works is of safe, reliable and sustainable transportation and public works infrastructure and services, demonstrating a commitment to service excellence in supporting the social and economic needs of Newfoundland and Labrador.   
Duties
 This is manual, at times physically demanding, semi-skilled work required in the operations and maintenance of government roads and bridges within the Central Region. Work may involve the safe operation of various tools and equipment used for highway maintenance, including the incidental operation of a motor vehicle. Work is often labour intensive, and may involve heavy lifting. Work is performed both inside and outside, sometimes in adverse weather conditions. Examples of work include - pothole patching; ditching; repairs to road signs; shovels snow from doorways and walkways; picks up parts and materials; loads and unloads trucks; keeps job sites clean and free of debris; digs fence post holes; cleans and maintains tools and equipment; acts as flag person in the direction of highway traffic, where required. Performs other related duties   

Merit Criteria (What is this?)

Screening Criteria
  1. Completion of high school. Equivalencies will be considered
  2. Experience in grounds maintenance, and the tools and equipment used in the performance of such work
  3. Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  4. Valid Flag person certificate
Assessment Criteria
  1. Knowledge of grounds maintenance and tools and equipment used in the performance of such work
  2. Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and safe work practices
  3. Ability to solve problems
  4. Ability to manage time and tasks
  5. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal)
  6. Works independently
  7. Relationship building

  1. Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  2. Recent Driver’s Abstract that is acceptable to the Employer
  3. Valid Flag person certificate
Conditions of Acceptance
  1. Lifting and moving bags of cold patch (66 lbs) and highway signage, guide rails and posts weighing up to and beyond 50 lbs occurs occasionally
  2. Work requires standing for prolonged periods, climbing over terrain and working in awkward positions, sometimes in adverse weather conditions
