Position Details (What is this?)

Service NL is a diverse department acting as a single access point for many of the licensing, permitting, inspecting, and regulating functions within government. Service NL is comprised of two branches delivering a wide range of quality programs and services to protect the health and safety of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians; regulate and enforce workplace safety and health practices with initiatives that protect and inform the province’s workforce and regulation and information to protect the interests of consumers in a wide range financial activities taking place throughout the province. With such a broad scope of functions, Service NL offers a vast array of dynamic employment opportunities that focus on serving and protecting the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.  
Reporting to the Manager of Inspections, the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector II is responsible for interpreting and enforcing safety legislation governing the installation, operation, maintenance and fabrication of boilers, pressure vessels, and pressure piping systems. Specifically, this position performs inspections on boilers, pressure vessels, liquefied petroleum, refrigeration and medical gas systems; conducts audits and approves the issuance of licenses and certificates; performs inspections on gas appliances, propane dispensing and bulk plants; supervises and evaluates high pressure welding tests; conducts investigations of incidents involving boilers, pressure vessels and gas equipment; gathers evidence and prepares technical reports; prepares Crown documentation for litigation; appears as Crown’s witness as required; and performs other related duties.

Merit Criteria (What is this?)

Screening Criteria
  1. Completion of a degree or diploma program in Mechanical Engineering OR Power Engineering – 1st or 2nd Class Certification or Power Engineering 3rd Class with significant related experience (equivalencies will be considered)
  2. Experience in the operation of boilers and pressure vessels
  3. Experience in the maintenance and repairs to boilers and pressure vessels
  4. Experience operating or performing maintenance and repairs to pressure piping systems (asset)
  5. Experience designing, constructing or installing boilers or pressure vessels (asset)
  6. Experience performing inspections of boilers or pressure vessels (asset)
Assessment Criteria
  1. Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repairs of boilers and pressure vessels
  2. Knowledge of relevant safety legislation, procedures and practices
  3. Knowledge of design, construction, and installation procedures of boilers and pressure vessels (asset)

  1. Willing to accept the requirements to travel by land, sea and air

  4. Acknowledges the requirement to become commissioned by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors after the first year of employment, unless already acquired
  5. Acknowledges the requirement for maintaining licensures / certifications as required
