Position Details (What is this?)

Context

The Department of Transportation and Works is responsible for the administration, supervision, control, regulation, management and direction of all matters relating to transportation and public works. As such, the department oversees the construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; the provision of the provincial ferry services; management of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers; and construction and management of provincial government buildings. The vision of the Department of Transportation and Works is of safe, reliable and sustainable transportation and public works infrastructure and services, demonstrating a commitment to service excellence in supporting the social and economic needs of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Duties

As part of a team offering safe marine transportation services , the incumbent will be responsible for performing custodial and daily maintenance duties to ensure that all areas of the vessel (galley, crew quarters, passenger areas, washrooms, etc.) are clean while at sea and in port; Performing general vessel maintenance; scrapes and paints vessel, as directed; Performing general seaman duties including assisting with docking and mooring lines during vessel arrivals and departures; assisting the Marine Cook with the preparation, cooking and serving of meals for vessel crew members including the clean-up of tables and dish washing. Use of a computer in the function of duties will be required. Other related duties as assigned.

Screening Criteria
  1. Experience in a Canadian marine environment in bridge look-out duties and steering duties
  2. Valid Food Safety and Handling Certificate
  3. Bridge Watch Certificate from Transport Canada to SCTW 95
  4. Valid Marine Medical Certificate
  5. Marine Basic First Aid Certificate
  6. WHMIS Certificate
  7. Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than fast rescue boats Certificate (asset)
  8. ROC-Marine Commercial Certificate (asset)
  9. Passenger Safety Management Certificate (asset)
Assessment Criteria
  1. Knowledge of bridge look-out duties and steering duties including use of deck machinery and equipment in a Canadian marine environment
  2. Knowledge of food safety and handling practices
  3. Computer skills
  4. Ability to solve problems independently
  5. Ability to manage time and tasks

  2. Certificate of Conduct and the Vulnerable Sector Query satisfactory to the Employer may be required
