Position Details (What is this?)

This position reports to the Senior Manager of Wildlife Research and works collaboratively with the Senior Wildlife Biologist and other departmental staff in Labrador.  The incumbent will assist with the development and implementation of a framework for the conservation of caribou (under the Boreal Caribou Conservation Agreement - BCAA).  This position will be responsible for designing caribou surveys, coordinating and conducting field-monitoring activities including classifications and population counts, conducting geospatial data analysis and contribute to the writing of technical reports on research and monitoring programs related to the BCCA.  This position will contribute to land use referral processes by reviewing technical reports and submissions, assessing impacts of proposed land uses and resource developments, providing regulatory guidance, and liaises with project proponents. The incumbent will support managers on the advancement of a collaborative management framework for Boreal Caribou with Indigenous Governments and organizations in Labrador.  This position will also be required to support the Range Planning Biologist in Corner Brook on the development of range plans for each of the Boreal caribou local populations in Labrador.

Merit Criteria (What is this?)

Screening Criteria
  1. Completion of a graduate degree in Biology (equivalencies will be considered)
  2. Experience with recovery and co-management planning
  3. Experience with the development and running of research and monitoring programs
  4. Experience developing population models
  5. Experience working with geospatial data
  6. Experience with geospatial applications (such as ARC GIS)
  7. Experience with statistical applications (such as R)

Conditions of Acceptance

  2. Willing to work flexible start/end times for workday
  3. Acknowledge requirement for operating a firearm
  4. Willing to travel to remote northern communities
  5. Acknowledges operation and maintenance of equipment including ATVs. snowmobiles, trucks, boats, and chainsaw as part of field duties. 
  6. Acknowledges requirement for travel by helicopter
  7. Acknowledges requirement for performing work in severe weather conditions in remote locations for extended periods of time
  8. Acknowledges requirement for maintaining licensures/certifications.
