Position Details (What is this?)

Duties
Responsible for the mechanical operation and maintenance  of the engine room and its auxiliaries, the successful candidate is required to act as engineer in charge of the engine room and auxiliaries by supervising and participating in activating, operating and controlling the main engines; inspect, clean and perform electronic, plumbing, troubleshoot and perform mechanical and hydraulic repairs as well as perform maintenance in accordance with departmental preventative maintenance schedules; ensures that back-up systems are in operational order; accompany the vessel as required during refit schedules and assists technical personnel (where required) in carrying out repairs and alterations; maintain an adequate level of supplies and routine parts;  Enters all work into the  maintenance program daily and develop a refit specification to be entered in the maintenance program and submitted to the Marine Superintendent eight weeks prior to scheduled refit.   Assist with operation of portable wharf lighting operation and vessel shore based genset operation and maintenance; use of a computer in the function of duties will be required. Engineers at this level may be called to serve in the capacity of Chief Engineer aboard qualifying vessels.

  1. Experience in marine engineering and the operation of marine diesel, hydraulic and electrical equipment in a Canadian environment
  2. Valid 3rd Class Motor Engineer’s Certificate issued by Transport Canada
  3. Valid Marine Medical Certificate
  4. Passenger Safety Management Course and Specialized Passenger Safety Management Course (asset)

Conditions of Acceptance
