Position Details

The Rooms Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador

Reporting to the Registrar of Museum Collections, the Museum Technician II carries out specialized physical, technical, and administrative work supporting the acquisition, documentation, storage, loan management, and preservation of museum collections. The position ensures accurate data entry and inventory control within computerized collection records and assists in maintaining the museum collection inventory, works closely with appraisers and contractors as required. The role supports the Registrar and Collections staff in administering and safeguarding the collection, including preparing and maintaining acquisition records and ensuring the physical care and security of collections being worked on. Duties may also include records management tasks, assisting with exhibitions, conducting collections research, supporting the design, construction, and maintenance of displays, and interpreting collections policies for curators and researchers. In collaboration with other Collections staff, this position supports the handling, transportation, and installation of museum loans across the Province, requiring occasional extended travel using Rooms vehicles or other travel options. In consultation with the Registrar and conservation staff, the Museum Technician II recommends appropriate preservation and conservation methods, oversees storage solutions and inventories, catalogues items, designs storage containers, assists with collection assessments, and contributes to collections teamwork plans. This position also assists with collections organization and research requests from the public, internal staff and other government agencies while ensuring collections standards are met.

Screening Criteria

  1. Completion of an undergraduate degree in Museum Studies, History, Anthropology, Archaeology or other Social Sciences with study specializing in Newfoundland and Labrador (equivalencies will be considered)
  2. Experience in using Microsoft applications and museum collections management software
  3. Experience in handling, cataloguing and storing museum artifacts and historical objects
