Eligibility for Competitions

Internal competitions are open to applicants who are employees of a GNL entity scheduled to the Public Service Commission Act or those holding lay-off status from such an entity as per GNL Human Resource policies, or the applicable collective agreement.

Anyone may apply for a public career opportunity.

To work for the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Service, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada or have written authorization to work in Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Preference will be given to applicants who meet this requirement.

Applying for Career Opportunities

All applicants require a user account to apply for posted career opportunities and it is mandatory to provide an email address when creating a user account. You should receive notification that your application was received within 15 minutes of submission. The notification will be sent to the email address associated with your account. You can also log in to your account at any time to view details of status updates that have been sent to you.

Applicants can withdraw from a competition before the posted closing date for receipt of applications.

To do so, log into "Your Account", select "Review Your Applications", and then select "Withdraw" on the specific competition from which they would like to withdraw. The withdraw option will not be available after the closing date for receipt of applications has passed. This action cannot be undone. An application that is withdrawn from the system cannot be recovered. An applicant may however reapply for the same competition before the posted closing date for receipt of applications.

Applicants can update their application before the posted closing date for receipt of applications by first withdrawing from the competition, then reapplying with the updated application.

To do so, log into "Your Account", select "Review Your Applications", and then select "Withdraw" on the specific competition from which they would like to withdraw. The withdraw option will not be available after the closing date for receipt of applications has passed. This action cannot be undone. An application that is withdrawn from the system cannot be recovered.

Once an applicant has withdrawn from a competition, they may reapply for that competition and submit an updated application before the posted closing date for receipt of applications.

There are many variables that determine how long it takes to issue screening results such as the size of the applicant pool, the availability of Selection Board members, and the relative priority of the competition. Normally, screening is completed within a few weeks of the competition closing date.

Accommodations and alternate assessment formats may be requested at any stage of the recruitment process by contacting recruitment@gov.nl.ca, 709-729-0130 or toll free at 1-888-729-7690. Video Relay Service (VRS) calls are welcomed. Accommodation requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Medical documentation is not needed; accommodation requests are considered based on self-identification of a candidate’s needs.

Completion of assessments depend on severable variables including the availability of candidates and the types of assessment tools used. Assessments are normally scheduled within a few weeks of issuing screening results.

Following the assessment, the Selection Board will evaluate candidates, conduct reference checks, and issue a recommendation report to the Departmental Head of the hiring department for review and candidate selection. Advertised conditions of employment are then confirmed before a job offer is issued.

E-mail notifications informing you of status changes are sent to the e-mail address saved to your user account. You can log in to your user account at any time to view details of status updates that have been sent to you.

Most positions are filled through competition or temporary movement of internal employees in accordance with collective agreement provisions. It might not always be possible to fill short-term, temporary vacancies using these methods and unsolicited applications from the public may be considered. Unsolicited applications are normally maintained for six months from date of receipt.
