Position Details
Reporting to the Supervisor of Exhibitions Programs, these positions are responsible for curating history and cultural exhibitions and making recommendations regarding collections acquisitions connected to the provincial museum of Newfoundland and Labrador. Responsibilities include development and timely delivery of curatorial work (research, interpretive planning, writing of exhibition and marketing texts about diverse topics, sourcing exhibition materials, working with exhibition designers, project managers, technical installers, and conservation and collections management staff) towards a combination of in-house, multi-disciplinary, temporary, travelling and digital exhibitions and publications that present and contextualize museum collections for diverse publics. They make regular updates to permanent exhibitions at The Rooms and regional museums. They also research, provide historical context and advise on acquisitions to the provincial museum’s permanent collection, and update records within collections management software. They work with community partners and collaborate with other institutions on curatorial initiatives. They participate in policy/strategy development and evaluation related to curatorial and collections work. They develop and implement individual work plans and generate reports on activities. They review and evaluate the work of contract staff and supervise volunteers and students working on collections. They provide content support and advice to the public programming team, supporting and delivering curatorial presentations to the public and speaking with media about collections and exhibition content.
Screening Criteria
- Master’s Degree in History, Public History, Curatorial Practice, Cultural Studies or Museum Studies (or related field) (equivalencies will be considered)
- Experience curating museum/history exhibitions
- Experience developing and delivering programs, services, and initiatives related to Newfoundland and Labrador's history and heritage.
- Experience working within an exhibition team
- Experience delivering public presentations on diverse topics
- Experience engaging with and providing services, programs, or information to diverse audiences
